You have a solver open in a tab and no idea what to do with what it shows you

It's a familiar scene: you ran a hand, the solver spits out a solution with frequencies split between check and bet, and you sit there staring at the screen without knowing what to take away from it. You're not alone. The solver gives you the correct answer for that exact spot, with those exact cards, against that exact range — but it doesn't tell you why that's the answer, and it definitely doesn't tell you how to generalize that to the next hand that's similar but not identical. If your study routine is just running hands and memorizing numbers, you're accumulating data without building understanding.

The solver is a verification tool, not a study method

Think of it this way: the solver tells you whether your answer was right or wrong, like a teacher grading an exam. But a teacher who only hands back a grade, without explaining what you got wrong, isn't teaching you anything. The real work happens before you open the solver: you need to arrive with your own hypothesis about which play is correct and why, and only then use the solver to confirm or correct that hypothesis. If you open the solver without having thought through the hand first, you're outsourcing the reasoning instead of training it.

Build your routine in three layers: review, discussion, and deliberate practice

A complete study routine isn't a single activity repeated over and over — it's a combination of different ways of processing the same information. Reviewing hands, yours and other people's, gives you raw material. Discussing hands with other players forces you to put your reasoning into words, which exposes gaps you don't see when you think alone. And deliberate practice — playing with a specific focus in mind instead of on autopilot — is what turns theoretical knowledge into something you later execute at the table without having to think about it.

  • Hand review: pick 5 to 10 hands per session, don't try to review everything you played
  • Discussion: explain a hand to someone else out loud or in writing — even if you're right, it will show you something
  • Deliberate practice: before you sit down to play, pick ONE concrete thing to work on that session
  • Journaling: write down the hands where you hesitated, not just the ones you lost
  • Spacing: revisit the same material more than once across different weeks, not all at once and then never again
The solver tells you what to do. Only you, by thinking before you check it, learn why.

Pick one focus per study session, don't try to fix everything at once

One of the most common mistakes is sitting down to study without a clear objective: you open the tracker, look at random hands, run a few through the solver, and close the session without knowing what you actually improved. It's far more effective to pick a specific focus per session — how you're playing 3-bet pots out of position, say, or how you're building your opening range from a given seat — and dedicate the whole session to that topic. At the end you'll be able to say precisely what you worked on, instead of vaguely feeling like you 'studied poker.'

Discussing hands with other players does something the solver can't

The solver gives you a number. A thoughtful player can ask 'why do you think that' and force you to defend your reasoning with words, not a frequency table. That conversation exposes something solo review never does: the gaps in your logic, the assumptions you took for granted without questioning them. Find a study group, even a small one, where people are comfortable challenging each other's hands. If nobody ever pushes back on you, you're probably getting validation, not real feedback.

Deliberate practice is the step most people skip

You can understand a spot perfectly in theory and still misplay it at the table, because understanding something and executing it under pressure are different skills. Deliberate practice means playing sessions with a specific goal: 'today I'm going to pay special attention to my 3-bet frequency' or 'today I'm going to force myself to think through the opponent's range before acting in every relevant hand.' It's not about playing perfectly — it's about turning something you currently do on autopilot into a conscious habit.

Measure progress by process, not just results

Poker's variance means a bad stretch doesn't necessarily mean you're playing worse, and a good stretch doesn't mean you're playing better. If you measure your progress purely by how much you won or lost in the short term, you'll draw the wrong conclusions about your own study. It's far more useful to keep a record of which concepts you worked on, which mistakes you've stopped making, and which situations that used to confuse you now resolve with more clarity. That's the real progress, even if it isn't reflected yet in a session's result.
