How the maths works

What are pot odds?

Pot odds compare the size of the pot with the cost of calling. If the pot is 90 and you must call 30, you risk 30 to win 90, which is 3 to 1. You need to win the hand at least 25% of the time (30 divided by 120) for the call to break even.

How do I count outs?

Outs are the unseen cards that would give you the best hand. A flush draw has 9 outs (13 cards of the suit minus the 4 you can see), an open-ended straight draw has 8, a gutshot has 4. Do not count a card if it would also complete a better hand for your opponent.

What is the rule of 4 and 2?

A quick estimate: multiply your outs by 4 on the flop (two cards to come) or by 2 on the turn (one card to come) to get your equity in percent. It is close for small draws and overshoots for big ones, which is why the calculator also shows the exact figure.

Does a profitable call always mean I should call?

No. Pot odds ignore what happens on later streets. Implied odds (what you can win after you hit) push the decision toward calling; reverse implied odds (hitting and still losing) push it toward folding. Treat the result as one input, not a verdict.

How is the bluff break-even calculated?

A bluff risks your bet to win the pot, so it needs to work bet divided by (bet plus pot) of the time. A half-pot bet needs about 33% folds; a pot-sized bet needs 50%. This ignores the equity your hand has when called.
